Project overview.

We designed and built an AI-powered assistant to support acquisition decisions. The tool combined a generative AI model with structured access to comparable title data, enabling editorial teams to assess the commercial viability of proposed books quickly and consistently. Books were categorised automatically by subject classification, comparable titles retrieved, and a tuned model applied to generate an evidence-based viability assessment — delivered in plain language accessible to non-technical users.

Challenge.

Acquisition decisions relied heavily on editorial judgement and experience, with limited access to structured market data at the point of decision. The organisation wanted to bring analytical rigour into the acquisitions process without slowing it down or undermining editorial instinct.

Result.

The tool demonstrated that generative AI could add genuine value in a creative decision-making context. Editorial teams were able to test acquisition ideas against commercial data quickly, with the output designed to inform rather than override judgement. The approach was recognised by senior leadership as among the most promising applications of generative AI seen across the industry.
